The Grounds
Umfors sits on the edge of Vindelfjällen — one of Europe's largest protected mountain wilderness areas. The map below shows the state-managed small game hunting areas in our region. The red arrow marks Umfors, where our cabins are located.

Overview of the numbered small game hunting areas (U-series west of the E12 road and R-series to the east) surrounding Umfors and Hemavan. Boundaries and availability are managed by Länsstyrelsen Västerbotten.
About the areas
Small game hunting on state land above the cultivation limit (odlingsgränsen) in Norrbotten and Västerbotten counties is divided into numbered hunting areas. Around Umfors these are the U-areas (U1–U13) west of the E12 road and the R-areas (R4–R18) to the east, all inside the Vindelfjällen nature reserve.
Each area has its own daily quota of hunters and its own harvest pressure limit. When the season's limit is reached, that area closes for the remainder of the season. Live availability, closures and any restrictions are published in the official NatureIT system.
Species
Maximum bag per hunter per day: 8 ptarmigan and 3 forest grouse (capercaillie and black grouse combined).
Seasons & permits
Hunting is open only to permanent residents of Sweden. Foreign hunters cannot yet purchase permits for this early period.
Open to everyone with a valid Swedish hunting permit. This is when international visitors can hunt small game around Umfors.

Rules of the mountain
The hunting grounds overlap with active reindeer herding land. Hunting is not permitted within 500 metres of a gathering of 25 or more reindeer, and not within 1,000 metres of reindeer herding facilities, gatherings, driven herds, livestock enclosures in use, or occupied cabins and homes.
Dogs that harass reindeer may not be brought on the hunt, and off-permit ground must be crossed with the dog under immediate control. Pointing and flushing bird dogs are allowed for bird hunting; in the coniferous forest zone all suitable hunting dogs may be used.
Overnighting in the field follows the Swedish right of public access (allemansrätten). Larger hunting camps (more than 18 m² of combined tent floor area) require permission from Länsstyrelsen.
We help with the invitation, the permit paperwork and lodging in our cabins so you can focus on the terrain.
